For 50 years Hemsö fortress was a top-secret facility, and only a select few were permitted to visit it. The Cold War was in full swing when it was built in the 1950s and 1960s.
Both east and west were struggling to win the arms race, and it felt as though nuclear war was sometimes imminent. The fortress was built and used in this climate, forming an extremely important and secret part of
Sweden’s coastal defences. Today Storråberget, the hill where the fortress is located, is an exciting and popular tourist destination. Café and restaurant.
Guided tours every full and half hour during summer.
